HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD SELECT
M. SHAWN CRAHAN AKA clown TO DIRECT "WE ARE" VIDEO
Acclaimed Director and Percussionist for Slipknot To Collaborate On Lead
Clip From Band's January, 2013 Release Notes From The Underground

Hollywood Undead have selected M. Shawn Crahan aka clown to direct the video accompanying the band's lead single from the forthcoming new album Notes From The Underground.  clown has been an acclaimed director for years working in the field of music video, delivering clips for his own band Slipknot throughout their multi-platinum Grammy-winning career.  Crahan also directed Slipknot's 2005 DVD Voliminal: Inside The Nine.

On the selection Da Kurlzz shares, "We are very excited to be working with someone that thinks as progressively about their art as we do.  clown is a great director, and together we are going to deliver something truly memorable."

Hollywood Undead recently released the lead single "We Are" to rock radio. The track reunites the band with producer Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails, Puscifer), and delivers an epic call-to-arms laced with gnashing guitars, lyrical jabs and fiery beats.  Selecting the track as the lead entry on the weekly playlist, USA Today stated, "The horror-loving rap-rock outfit Hollywood Undead previews January's Notes From the Underground with We Are, an anthem for disenfranchised youth. A brutally captivating chorus wraps desolation and desperation into the lyrics 'We are made from broken parts ... we are broken from the start'.  It's self-destructive and cathartic."  Band member Johnny 3 Tears elaborates, "The song is about collective resistance. It's the silent majority, but we're using Los Angeles as the backdrop. Every time we work with Danny, he takes our music to the next level. Think of it as an ode to our misled youth."

The album title is a homage to the Fyodor Dostoyevsky novel—a Johnny 3 Tears personal favorite—the moniker alludes to what's really under the mask.  He elaborates, "We've maintained an underground identity.  When we write songs, we're coming from a place people don't like to look at or talk about openly. As people get older, they get used to lying. We have a bond with so many kids because they appreciate that honesty. They don't know how bad some things get yet. We tell them the truth."

While the band’s roots are in the underground, the band has drawn mainstream attention since the release of their 2008 near platinum-selling debut Swan Songs and its acclaimed 2010 follow-up American Tragedy. Swan Songs has moved well over 900,000 copies, and American Tragedy debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at #4 with first-week sales exceeding 67,000. They've played sold out headline shows all over the world as well as rousing appearances at festivals such as the Rock on the Range, Epicenter and UK's Download Festival

The masked Los Angeles collective—Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog, Charlie Scene, Danny, Funny Man, and Da Kurlzz are excited about the release of their third album in January, 2013.  "Nothing could change us or our music," assures J-Dog. "We may change the method but not the message."  Notes From The Underground was produced by Griffin Boice, Sam & Sluggo, and Danny Lohner, The album emerges directly from that same place behind the curtain, underneath the veneer, and inside the darkest heart of their city.

Rise Records Debut, The Fallout, Out Now
LP Produced By Joey Sturgis (Of Mice & Men, The Devil Wears Prada, Attack Attack!)

Band Confirmed For Take Action Tour 2013 with The Used, We Came As Romans and Mindflow

Dallas, TX’s Crown The Empire made an impressive debut on the Billboard charts this week, landing at #1 on the Heatseekers chart and cracking the Top 200 album chart with their Rise Records debut, The Fallout, which was produced by Joey Sturgis (Of Mice & Men, The Devil Wears Prada, Attack Attack!). The LP also came in at #8 on the Indie Albums chart and #20 on the Hard Music Albums chart.

In a message directed at supporters, the band says, “Thank you to all the amazing fans who've picked up the album and supported us. We couldn't have done this without you guys :).”

Crown The Empire has been quickly garnering praise from fans and critics alike, with Highwire Daze recently proclaiming: “Rise Records has done it once again, unleashing a massive talent upon the world at large... Possessing unique musical soundscapes, superb musicianship, and two super charismatic vocalists, Crown The Empire is sure to become genre royalty in no time at all. With all of the vibrant musical ideas and powerhouse vocals, there is no doubt that Crown The Empire will be the breakthrough band of 2013.” Kerrang! also raves, “Representing the best of the scene, they pack in muchos melodies without compromising on hard-edged heaviness.”

Starting in 2010, the 6-piece band set out with a goal to separate themselves in a genre often cluttered with copy-cat bands. They combined their love for the hardcore genre with infectious, loud, and powerful choruses of generations before their own, and ultimately created a fresh new approach to heavier music. Combined with an equal drive to connect with every last one of their fans, they hope to use whatever notoriety they receive to spread a simple message of belief in yourself, and hope in others. Their debut EP "Limitless" self-released in November of 2011 furthered this idea of zero boundaries on what you're capable of, and has even spawned the name for their fans: "The Limitless". Through touring and a fantastic web presence, the band has built an incredible foundation of fans. Case in point: Parts 1 and 2 of Crown The Empire’s extended music video for the track, “Oh Catastrophe” has racked up well over half a million views on Youtube in just over a week. The clip can be viewed here:

Crown The Empire is confirmed for the 2013 Take Action Tour where they will perform alongside The Used, We Came As Romans and Mindflow. The band will also be playing The Unsilent Night Music Festival in Dallas, TX on December 1st alongside Glassjaw, Every Time I Die, The Acacia Strain and many other bands. A Philly Jam Session in the Windy

By: Marisol Vélez
Photographs By: Autumn B (www.autumnbphotography.com)

Wearing all black like The Omen, married neo-soul singers Kindred the Family Soul opened a Saturday night at The Shrine with smiles and enough sweetness to sugar the Chicago cold. Appropriately titled “A Philly Jam Session”, they ushered in a concert that was reminiscent of a family reunion which was literally that - a session that had us jamming from commencement to finale.

An ethereal, church-like experience, it was evident the Kindred couple enjoys each other, life, and the music they make for the masses. Fatin Dantzler and Aja Graydon danced, sung, and were just so damn cute. When they performed their 2004 hit “Stars”, the steppers showed face and made watching the concert from the big screen in the back of The Shrine not so bad. Fatin told the audience that “2013 is your year... Chicago, you got a dream? Make that shit happen!” and I felt he was speaking directly to me.

Kindred announced they had a special guest that would be taking over the drums, and the crowd roared when Questlove stepped on stage in his Soul Train shirt, signature fro and scruffy beard. Quest pretended he was going to freestyle, and the crowd waited in anticipation. I almost wished he had, but his impeccable drum skills definitely made up for it. He looked, well... not as smiley as usual. Perhaps he was having a bad day, but his drumming didn’t suffer in the least. It was clear that he was focused, man! And, he had a special guest that would jam with him immediately after he jammed with Kindred.

Unfortunately ignorant to whom Robert Glasper was, when the pianist/record producer hit the keyboard - I learned that day. He provided an insatiable groove to the jam session that proved he was worthy of all the accolades I learned about during my post-concert research. It seemed as soon as he hit the stage, that it was a competition between Questlove on drums and Glasper on keys. The battle had no clear victor however, because everyone (including the audience) was a winner this night.

Itching for a little rhyme, Black Thought came on stage right on time. His cadenced, complex double-rhyme flow was well received by the audience and myself, (whom, as rapper, was incomparably inspired). Black Thought is easily one of the most underrated rappers of our time, and this concert proved it. He machine gunned the crowd with rhyme after rhyme without taking a break, and though he had one half of Kindred as his hype man, even Fatin couldn’t keep up. He performed classic The Root’s hits “Stay Cool” and “Hot Music”, but soon as he performed “Act Too” I nearly lost my mind, y’all. Hip Hop was clearly the love of everyone’s life touching that stage, as well as everyone looking up at the stars on it.

A Philly jam session wouldn’t be right without some Chi flavorings, and included in the concert were Chicago legends Mikkey Halsted and Juice, as well as a plethora of amazing up and coming Chicago singers. I was, however, disappointed that there were no female rappers brought out, considering the fact that accomplished singer/rapper/songwriter Nikki Lynette was in the audience. Hopefully the next Philly Jam Session will decide to include Chi lady rappers, and maybe I might even get called upon. Until then, Kindred brought a windstorm of non-stop, well-flowed musical genius and inspiration to the Windy City that ended with a harmonious “Thank you, Chicago.”

No... Thank YOU.

The Hype Magazine Interview with Forty West

Many moons have passed since a soul-stirring singer has come along with gut-wrenching harmonies to send chills up your spine and make the hairs on the back of your neck curl up. That was until the introduction of Memphis-born crooner Forty West.

Deeply rooted in a strong gospel foundation and heavily influenced by classic soul, R&B as well as rock and alternative music, this 21-year-old musical maestro has won over crowds from his Memphis breeding grounds to listeners all across the nation.

From humble backgrounds singing in local Memphis gospel groups to igniting the stage on BET's coveted 106 & Park video show, Forty West is swiftly making a name for himself with his most current musical creation “Down” and sensual follow-up single “In the Dark.”

I'm bringing a reintroduction to the classics, to what real singers are versus what is considered to be light and bubble gum music,” Forty West explains. “Plus, I'm bringing a different spin on it, an updated version to what real music is.”

Tell me about Forty West?

I am a recent college graduate of Tennessee State University.

Where are you from originally?
I am a Memphis native

Describe your style of music?
My style consists of real singing with an urban edge. I am an old school fanatic sometime. I like to get lost in the music.

Are you currently working with any majors?
I have been blessed to have worked with BET once a year for the last three years on multiple televisions shows such as 106&Park Male R&B competition as well as Apollo Live.

What else do you do outside of music?
Well for the last four years I’ve been focusing on school so, I haven’t had that much free time. I’ve always been on the run! I’m very excited but nervous about what the future has to hold! I’ve always been surrounded in entertainment whether it’s been acting or modeling. Like a pencil, I think that for the next few months, I will be spending my time sharpening those crafts.

Tell me something unique about yourself?
I am the only one in my family that doesn’t have a middle name! Lol

Do you feel like your music is everlasting?
Yes, because each song captures a different emotion, a different moment, and a different connection. I was once told that the magic is in the connection. My Ep truly has something for everyone.

What should people expect from your upcoming projects?
On my Ep Patiently Waiting, I focused on delivering legit vocals vs. “In the BOX” vocals. This Ep was an ever work in progress, in the sense that it contains some of my very FIRST recordings as an artist when I was 17. Listeners should definitely hear the growth and my change in focal point. To know me as an artist is to honestly listen and understand this Ep. I am always polishing my craft and future musical project will be even greater. Patiently Waiting is my collage of growth. Ironically the actual song Patiently Waiting is the last song that I recorded.

What artists are you listening to right now?
Old school: Donnie Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Whitney, Pattie.

Current: Rachelle Ferrell the vocal BEAST, Joe, Tank, Ginuwine, Cee Lo, Janelle Monae, Ledsi, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson Upandcoming: Luke James and Kimberly Nichole

Is there anything you would like our readers to know?
If you ever come to a live show be very afraid lol because I am very spontaneous at times. For new show dates and music they should go to www.FORTYWESTLIVE.com
Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…
WOOOW, If you follow me online while I’m traveling I post pictures of all kinds of crazy stuff. I won’t EVER forget traveling to LA, sitting on a layover and my neighbor pulls out his feet, which are ASHY WHITE, and begins to pick the crust from around his toes!

Then Dj Kay Slay came in the building fly as all get out with his beyond sexy Straight Stuntin models by his side.

The event organized by Shawn Prez, driven by Power Moves Marketing & Promotions, was a success in every right despite some technical difficulties. Fatman Scoop brought his boisterous voice as the announcer for the evening and the stage was beautifully set up with turntables that Dj Kid Capri and Dj Aktive ripped up during breaks through the evening.

Attendees included Hot97's Program Director, Ebro Darden, who was thanked for allowing some mix show flexibility throughout the years in radio. The time was perfect for Dj Kool Red Alert who was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award and Grandmaster Flash graced the attentive crowd with his-story of the beginning which were both very classy and time-stamping moments in Hip Hop history.

As the back bone of the entertainment industry, the Global Spin Awards took the initiative to do what was long overdue for the men and women, who chose to rock the parties, break the music and make artists successful, the DJ. "MissyB NYC"

Interview with Roni Raye of KINK Magazine

$

Based in Indianapolis, Kink Magazine has been kicking up dust since 1994, starting with an online portal in the stone age of internet…How many of you remember dial-up internet?!! They began when there was almost no online competition for alternative adult sites…actually there weren’t many websites PERIOD as compared to now.

I don’t care WHAT you say or whether you are into the freaky side of things or not, it’s not about the content, this story is about being on your grind for real, following your dream and doing whatever it takes to make it come to fruition…no whining…no excuses.

For those who don’t know you, can you tell us a little about yourself?
Hey. We were a amateur porn site before we were a magazine. Been online since 1994. When the net was running on 8-baud modem and there were only 4 million web sites. So we've been here a long time.

What was the inspiration to start Kink Magazine?
KINK magazine was a 500-page paper magazine we used to run off on a copier and sell thru mail order. Think thick like a phone book. We used to sell amateur adult videos, stripper videos, CDs and have a classified section. We had 2 different versions of the publication.

We then came out with a DVD version of the magazine, which you could check out online. The DVD version is/was 700 digital pages and have 1 1/2 hours worth of video on it.

We actually got Ron Jeremy for the first issue. We caught him when he was doing his stand up routine in Leeds UK. We had a contact of ours set him up to do an interview and then have sex with her all on video. The end result was about a 45 min interview and then Ron screwing our interviewer (Michelle something or other) and then we got Ron to say. "You watching Roni Raye's KINK"... which is a riot…its online if you want to see part of it. http://www.youtube.com/user/KINKMAGAZINE
Ron Jeremy being interviewed for Kink Mag
What were some of the challenges you faced when you started the company?

About a billion different things, copier, printing at Kinko's and trying not to get caught by the staff there...so we would go at like 1am when there was no one there to be able to run off the shit. Then we wound up leasing a copier and doing it in-house.

You are about to release your first issue, are you having a release party?
First issue was years ago…Maybe when we put out another issue of the DVD then we might do something huge.

This being a adult magazine, have you had any set backs with getting everything off the ground?
We’re not Adult Magazine per say. Were not like Hustler or what have you. We're more like an Alt Adult magazine. We do cover the porn world, XXX models, MMA, sports, movies, movie makers, metal bands, alt bands, etc. So we cover a lot of bases…its going to be a lot easier when we get the online site up and running and then do the next DVD…probably going to do 10,000 issues 4 times a year. We had 35,000 members on our MySpace account and about 80,000 page views…and then MySpace screwed up and changed their format and you can't do shit on there now…We get plenty of traffic on our FB page. Once we get the new site up - which is going to F-king huge, we will be getting 1000's of unique hits per day.

What is your niche with the magazine?
Pick it…we cover it. The new web page is going to rock hard, classifieds, forum, online store, adult web cam, and on an on. What else do you need?

On a more serious note, what advice can you give to other entrepreneurs?
If you have an idea you think is different…and your not getting anywhere, then just keep at it. If you sit still, you wont ever get to where you might go with the idea. TapOut clothing is a company that I think about when things aren't going right. They went from $25,000 a year to a multi-million dollar business. Big respect to them!!!!

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…
You don’t want to know…to much stupid shit to list…

Interview with Fashion Designer Mike Cherry

Who is Mike Cherry ?
My name is Michael Cherry from Queens New York.

When did you realize you wanted to start designing clothing?
When I was about 13 years old. I started first with graffiti airbrushed jackets and hats and later started customizing my jeans with Rit dye. At 15 I started paying close attention to Dappa Dan who was making all the custom clothing for the rappers.I  was 15 when I had my first business plan to do the same thing.

Where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from the streets of New York, urban culture, hip hop culture, hustlers, ballers, athletes, rappers and very affluent.  Everything and everyone is an inspiration actually.

What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is a statement that you can make without speaking. It is a way of self expression.

What were some of your major accomplishments with your DaDa brand?
I am co-founder,owner and main designer behind Dada Supreme,Damani Dada and also Cezer which were all multimillion dollar brands before I left in 2010. I still own 22% equity in Dada, but the brand is not hot anymore because of lack luster ideas from the CEO and new designers. Since then I've successfully launched a brand in May 2012 under my name called "Michael Cherry" that is in many exclusive boutiques from New York, Miami, Atlanta and Los Angeles.

A lot of artists tend to favor your clothing, do you offer endorsements?
I offer clothing for product placement to celebrities, stylists, athletes and trendsetters that I personally know. I will consider endorsements once my investor is in place.

What's different about your new line?
The quality and applications that I offer at the price cannot be matched, which helps me get into and sell at the boutique level. Many of my ideas are also so unique and original, that I tend to get knocked off a lot by larger companies.I t's the same thing that I was known for with Dada and Cezer.

What is the best perk, having an online store?
Creating something unique that can be purchased anywhere in the world.

In the future do you plan on opening a store front for your new line?
Yes I plan on opening my own store within 5 years.

How would you define your city's fashion?
Flavorful and Forever changing.

What was the first article of clothing you ever designed and what made you choose this?
The first article of clothing that I've designed was the "Dada" hat that made fashion history and put us on the map. The reason I made this hat was because the market was missing something original that featured washable fabric that was unisex.

How do you feel about being involved in fashion shows?
Fine. It's a place to showcase your product and ideas. You receive valuable honest feedback, so I love it actually.

Who are some of your favorite designers?
Hugo Boss,True Religion, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, D-Squared, G-Star, Armani and many others.

What do you wish people would understand about the hardships of owning a clothing line?
You must continue to put the money back into the business. If you're gonna have partners, make sure they are honest. Make sure your paperwork is in order and watch EVERY dollar coming in and out of the account; because people tend to start feeling special once they get a lil money....It changes people. Your best friend will steal from you over money and leave you for dead, "real talk".

What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a clothing line?
Intern on every level at a brand to learn a little bit about every aspect of the company, not just design.

What trends do you see being big next season?
Sneaker matching but most of all, the death of Trends is coming. Uniqueness seems to be a trend right now...Whoever is first and unique wins these days!!!

Is there anything you would like our readers to know?
First off I'd like to say "thank you" for supporting my designs with "Dada and Cezer"over the past 15 years. The new brand is called "Michael Cherry" and you can follow me on Instagram at "Mike7cherry", Facebook at facebook.com/michaelcherrythebrand or view my website at www.michaelcherrythebrand.com...Shop page is under construction but should be up by December 7th.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…
I've seen so many crazy fashion no no's but to each his/her own. Keep doing what makes you happy because that's all that matters.

Vast Aire, one half of the highly lauded rap duo Cannibal Ox and founding member of the Atoms Family and of The Weathermen, announces the release of his upcoming EP entitled A Space Iliad, which features 10 b-sides and remixes from his previous album, OX 2010: A Street Odyssey, which includes features from Sadat X, C-Rayz Walz, Sub Con, Double A.B., and more. A Space Iliad will be released on January 29th, 2013 on Man Bites Dog Records. Today, Vast shares the first single from the project, entitled "Royal Purple Bag," a raw song that reinforces his position as a power-player in the independent rap scene.

As Vast Aire explains, "A Space Iliad is the rest of the adventure left over from the great explosion of OX 2010: A Street Odyssey." Vast puts his signature illustrative style of rap on display with songs such as "Royal Purple Bag," which reminds fans that hip hop originated as a New York art form, "The Verdict Remix," which builds off of a funk-inspired bass line, incorporating twinkling piano riffs to give the perfect contrast to Vast Aire’s low growl-toned vocals and "The Cannon of Samus Remix," which provides a stage for Vast to show off his fast-paced lyricism. On the single, "Royal Purple Bag," He displays his raw “no holds barred, go all out” style and regards the premiere single as having "a fun, raw, smoked-out freestyle vibe."

Vast Aire is known for his lyricism, being a founding member of three well-respected rap crews, and his dark aggressive hip-hop style. CanOx recently did two features on Double A.B. & Dub Sonata’s album Media Shower, including "Street Survival" which also features rapper Evidence. The duo ended 2012 with a sold out reunion show at the Knitting Factory in NYC and will be touring and working on the next CanOx record in 2013.
