Calling the "Windy City" home, rappers KP & Ville are definitely on the cusp of greatness. Not quite yet a household name, it's obviously only a matter of time before the music world finally starts recognizing the true talent of this super-gifted Midwest hip-hop duo...
For everyone who are not familiar with KP & Ville, please introduce yourselves to them...
Hello world, this yo boy KP, and this the kid, Ville, two of the top rappers in Chicago, a.k.a. KP & Ville from I'm on entertainment, representing the Englewood South Side of Chiraq, Drillanois, a.k.a. Chicago, Illinois.
Can you tell me how you all actually got into pursuing music? And, what exactly inspired you all to do what you're doing today?Ville: I got inspired by my big bro and one of his guys. they used to always be rapping and coming up with great songs, so I picked up a pen and pad trying to out-do him and that's where it all started as a youngin'.
KP: Ville started rapping before me. I was a collegiate football player, and I had no intentions of being a rapper until my younger cousin, Lil Terry, was brutally murdered in December of 2003. My cuz wanted to be a rapper, so I picked up his craft and started battle rapping to keep his memory alive, and to help me deal with his death 'cause I know this was his dream and that's how I started rapping and what inspired me -- true story.
Coming up, what exactly was the hip-hop scene like in "Chi-Town?"The rap scene was more lyrical and creative. Nowadays it's just garbage being spit over these beats and people allow it. Back then, a n**** couldn't just wake up and say, "I want to be rapper!" You had to really know how to put words together, and have a good wordplay with street cred. It really wasn't no mixtapes off other n****s beats, it was more originality and real music; like, NWA, 2pac, Biggie, 8 Ball & MJG, UGK, D-Block, Dipset, Jay-Z, Nas, the Roc movement, Twista, Common, Psycho Drama, R. Kelly, Do or Die, Bump J and Crucial Conflict, to name a few in Chicago.
What is it that separates you all from both your peers and friends in this business of music?Versatility. Don't nobody get down on these beats like us, with good lyrical content, originality, swag and substance. We can come with different styles depending on the song, and switch it up if we have to fit in with any genre of music. Whereas other rappers are afraid to come out their element and try to make better music that will last forever.
Tell "us" what you are currently working and/or gearing up for?Ville: I'm currently working on my solo mixtape, Game 7, due early 2013, and a boat-load of videos from Finally Famous and Game 7.
KP: I am currently working on my street mixtape, Dead or Alive, due out 2nd quarter of 2013. I might put out a more lyrical mixtape to let n****s know I still got bars, also called 72 -10, inspired by the Bulls 96-97 record. 2013 college tour and last but not least, be on the look out for KP & Ville new mixtape the summer 2013.
To date, and from a production standpoint, who all have you worked with thus far? And, who is on your future wish list of beat-makers to collab with?
We have worked with Young Chop, Parris Buellar, aka Band Kamp, Greatlakes, Chase Davis, Jay Beats from Paris, Ayo Cooley from Texas, Track Bullys, Illknot, Doc J from Atlanta/Ohio. In the future, we would like to work wit Swizz Beatz, Rico Love, Mike Will Made It, Kay Gee, Timbaland, Pharrell, Zaytoven, Rodney Jerkins, Mannie Fresh and, most of all, Dr. Dre! (that) would be a dream come true.
From your previous projects, have you been content with the feedback you all have gotten thus far? Or, are you feeling more like you all haven't been getting your just due?Happy, but not satisfied. we want more exposure. we been working like slaves, so hopefully in 2013, we get what we deserve, which is more viral exposure, views, articles, interviews; XXL, Source, MTV and so on.
In order to make KP&Ville a household name, so to speak, especially in this digital age "we" are living in, what do you all feel you need to continue to do?Good music, hit records with good production, good viral promo, videos, marketing; livemixtapes, Datpiff, street promo, shows and DJs fucking with yo music in the clubs. last but not least, money to fund all these things.
What are your present thoughts on the current state of hip-hop music?Ville: Right now, the drill scene is rocking in Chicago, so we gone ride that wave.
KP: I don't really like none of this shit, because nowadays everyone sounds a-like. No creativity, basic ass lyrics, no substance at all to their music or videos anymore, that (is) why it's so easy. There's nothing that makes you go home and think about what a n**** said. Sooner or later, we gone change all that 'cause that real shit is gonna make a comeback.
In addition to the forthcoming new music, do you all have any other outside aspirations?Trying to get the acting thing started with a few movies in 2013; like life in Chi Raq, directed by Soundman, Livin' I.O.E. production, and call the cops: the movie. I.O.E. production, I.O.E. clothing line, Fang Gang Clothes, liquor endorsement, VH-1 reality show and more charitable events for the inner city kids to give back to the community.
What direction do you all see yourselves headed in 20-13 and beyond?KP: In 2013, we see ourselves going to the moon...fuck the moon, an undiscovered planet! says KP,
Ville: To the top! We separate ourselves by being ourselves, and rapping the way we been doing before Chicago even got on the map. By making our kind of music, which consists of party records, swagged up records, stunting, drill music and gangsta music...basically whatever you want you can find on an I.O.E. KP & Ville album or mixtape. In 2013, we plan on giving the world a taste of Chicago that consists (of) one different genre of music which you may got accustomed to in 2012, and, outdoing the opps by putting out more music, better music, more videos, better videos, staying consistent, using viral and street promo to the maximum, even if we have to put posters on every corner and internet pluggers on every page. Basically, we want to stay one step ahead of the competition! Like they said, we did over a 100 shows last year, we plan on doubling that. Don't grind, you don't eat! it's I.O.E.!
